This two-hour combined lecture and discussion will educate attendees about implicit bias in the legal profession. The session begins with an introduction to the concept of implicit bias against persons because of race, gender, disability, age, and/or sexual orientation. Next, the session will explain where implicit bias is encountered in law firm settings and will offer commonly-seen examples of implicit bias in action. Finally, the session will break into small groups to facilitate discussion regarding ideas for combatting implicit bias in decisions regarding hiring, assigning work to, mentoring, retaining, and promoting attorneys.
