This two-hour combined lecture and discussion will educate attendees about implicit bias in the legal profession. The session begins with an introduction to the concept of implicit bias against persons because of race, gender, disability, age, and/or sexual orientation. Next, the session will explain where implicit bias is encountered in law firm settings and will offer commonly-seen examples of implicit bias in action. Finally, the session will break into small groups to facilitate discussion regarding ideas for combatting implicit bias in decisions regarding hiring, assigning work to, mentoring, retaining, and promoting attorneys.

Speaker: Sybil Dunlop, Greene Espel
Sybil Dunlop helps clients resolve complex commercial and intellectual property disputes. As a counselor, Sybil advises Fortune 100 clients as they navigate business disputes with contractors, clients, and business partners. She invests in learning each client’s business and works to manage risk in the event of litigation. As a litigator, Sybil is a passionate advocate with first-chair trial and arbitration experience.
Prior to joining Greene Espel, Sybil clerked for the Honorable James M. Rosenbaum of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. Sybil graduated from Vanderbilt University Law School, Order of the Coif, where she served as Senior Notes Editor for the Vanderbilt Law Review. She received her B.A. from Smith College.
Sybil presents to audiences across the nation on the topics of federal practice, discovery, and legal writing. She offers her thoughts about the practice of law in a monthly column for Minnesota Lawyer entitled Sybil Procedure, and she hosts a recurring webcast series for Minnesota CLE. As part of her efforts to increase diversity within our profession, she has developed a CLE on the topic of implicit bias and is looking forward to sharing that presentation with the MDLA.
